The book Red Glass is a book about sixteen year old Sohpie, who lives on the border of Arizona and Mexico. Its an area where lots of immigrints cross the border to come to the United States. A group of immigrints, 7 people tried to cross the border but only one surived. His name was Pablo. THrough the book Pablo becomes like a brother to Sophie but The family has to travle through Mexico in search of Pablos Family. My impression of this book is that it is a sad story that most teenagers living in the USA will never have to go through. I could never imageine being like Pablo and Facing so hard conditions only to get to freedom. "i imagined them pressing their cheeks against the dust, thinking about the happy life they would have had if only they reached the end of this desert." This is a quote from the book, that the main character Sophie thought one night after stoping to look around the desert that many immigrints cross. Its sad to think that people would go through that much hardships just to have a better life.
I think this book should win the kentucky book award becasue it isnt a type of book that many people write about. It also shows how different cultures live becasue of the trip through mexico you can just imagine from the chracters perspective how it is to live there. This book was interseting and it deserves to get an award.
A detail in the book helped make the plot more interesting was Sophias Aunts Boyfriends son. His name is Angel. I think this chracter makes the plot more interesting because he makes the story a romance story becasue there is somewhat of a love connection between angel and sophie.
I agree with all of the reviews i read about the book. One person posted a comment I loved this book. "One of the things that was really well done was how it was multi-cultural without being culturally exclusive." This is pretty much how i felt, with the mix of spanish and Guatamalan that the chracters expierence. I also agree with one other comment i read about the type of person Sophie is. They thought of her as having courage. when reading the book this is how i thought of her. Sophie describes herself as not being strong or brave but i thought she was very brave to travle through out mexico.
